Shark cartilage

Shark cartilage is a food supplement made from the powdered cartilage of sharks. It is rich in calcium and phosphorus. It also contains amino acids and compounds that seem to inhibit cellular angiogenesis, the ability to generate new blood vessels. Shark cartilage also contains chondroitin sulfate, which has antiinflammatory properties.

Therapeutic uses

The ability to inhibit angiogenesis means that shark cartilage may be valuable i n inhibiting tumor growth, and treating eye disorders such as diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. It has also been used to treat AIDS, arthritis, psoriasis, and bowel inflammation.

Shark cartilageCautions

Shark cartilage should not to be used by anyone who is still growing and needs angiogenesis for blood vessel development. Pregnant women, anyone with cardiovascular problems, or anyone recovering from surgery should also avoid shark cartilage.
