Digestive herbs

There are several supplements and digestive herbs that may be useful in improving liver function. Antioxidants help to protect the liver from free radical damage; and carnitine, choline and inositol may help to prevent the accumulation of fat in the liver.
Digestive herbs include a group of plants known as bitters, which stimulate the flow of digestive juices from the glands of mouth, stomach, pancreas and small intestine.

Digestive herbsBitters also stimulate liver activity, increasing both bile production and release from the gallbladder. They may also stimulate insulin secretion by the pancreas, and muscle activity in the gut. They help the gut wall repair damage by stimulating repair mechanisms. Bitter herbs include dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), gentian (Gentiana lutea), goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis), milk thistle (Silybum marianum), chamomile (Matricaria recutita) and yarrow (Achillea millefolium).
