Skullcap plant

Skullcap plant (Scutellaria baicalensis, S. lateriflora) is a Chinese herb that has gained acceptability among Westerners, especially as a safe treatment for insomnia. Since it was first mentioned in Chinese writings back in A.D. 250-330, it has been valued as a diuretic, an antiinflammatory, and for its calming effects.

Uses of Skullcap plant:

Skullcap is used to treat anxiety, headaches, and insomnia.

Dosage Information:

The preferred forms are capsules, tincture, and dried leaves for infusions. Also available are tablets and the prepared tea. To preparean infusion, pour 8 ounces boiling water over 2 teaspoons dried herb and steep covered for ten to fifteen minutes. Drink up to 3 cups daily. Skullcap is best taken after meals. Skullcap may cause drowsiness, so do not drive a car or operate heavy machinery after taking it. Other temporary side effects include stomach upset and diarrhea.
