To the Seminoles of what is now the southeastern United States, the reddish brown to black berries on this palm-family shrub were good food. How the Seminoles ate them, we'll never know, for the berries taste terrible and stink to high heaven. Only later were they used to ease upset stomachs and insomnia, among other complaints. None of the traditional uses heralded saw palmetto's current status as the premier treatment, natural or synthetic, for prostate problems.

Used by the American Indians as a male tonic, saw palmetto inhibits the conversion of the male hormone testosterone to its more active form and also has anti-estrogenic effects.

Saw palmetto is mainly used to treat benign prostatic hypertrophy, a disorder in which the prostate gland becomes enlarged. It can also be used to treat urinary tract infections.
