Sassafras benefits

Medicinal Properties:

As Native Americans knew, sassafras encourages the excretion of urine and lowers body temperature. But its sweet taste and fever-reducing potential may come at a high cost. The tree's wood contains 1 to 2 percent of an oil that may be about 80 percent safrole, which, in its pure form, is a tumor-generating, gene-altering, hallucinogenic liver toxin. Even without the safrole, the tree's oil has caused tumors in lab animals. (No volatile oil, whether from sassafras or any other plant, should ever be ingested in pure form. See "Sassafras side effects.")
