Grape benefits

Medicinal Properties:

Like grape seeds, wine and whole grapes have a host of phytomedicinal compounds that relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and protect the cardiovascular system from free radical harm. Among them are a group of flavonoids called oligomeric pro-cyanidins (OPCs). Found abundantly in an extract of grape seeds (pine bark and peanut husks are other sources), OPCs possess a dramatic ability to protect and tone capillaries, with reportedly some 50 times more antioxidant might than even vitamins C and E. Studies suggest that their therapeutic potential comes into play against a number of microcirculatory problems, from chronic venous insufficiency and varicose veins to macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. OPCs also deter the deterioration of collagen, a basic building block of the skin, blood vessels, cartilage, tendons, and ligaments. The alpha-hydroxy acid in grapes helps remove superficial dead skin cells, which in turn supposedly diminishes fine wrinkles.

Of late, another compound, resveratrol, has been identified in grapes. Resvera-trol possesses significant anti-inflammatory potential and displays some ability to lower blood fats, protect the body from oxidation, and inhibit certain tumors. Grape leaves contain anywhere from 10 to 100 times more of this phytochemical than the fruit, but the seeds are possibly as rich a source as the leaves.
