What Ginger herb Is:
The thick, knotty rhizome of this perennial plant has been a culinary and medicinal mainstay for thousands of years. Probably half of the herbal formulas in traditional Chinese medicine include ginger as an active ingredient, usually to soothe the stomach, encourage appetite, and offset the effects of other strong natural medicines. Native to Asia, ginger is now grown in a number of tropical countries, including India, Nigeria, and Haiti. Jamaica is the world's leading cultivator. The common name comes from a Sanskrit word meaning "horn-shaped"; the botanical name is from the Greek word for the root, zingiberis.
Highly valued as a spice, ginger has been used medicinally for thousands of years by Chinese physicians. Ginger acts as an antioxidant and has has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-clotting and pain-killing properties.
