Glaucoma eye

Glaucoma eye is characterized by increased pressure within the eye (or intraocular pressure), caused by a buildup of fluid in the eye. The improper flow of fluids appears to be caused by abnormalities in the structure of a protein called collagen in the eye; stress also appears to be a major factor in many cases. Glaucoma eye affects approximately 2 million Americans and is the major cause of blindness among adults. Nearly 2 percent of people older than forty have glaucoma.

Glaucoma eye may be acute or chronic. Acute cases usually occur in one eye only and are accompanied by severe throbbing pain in the affected eye, blurred vision, a moderately dilated pupil, nausea, and vomiting. People with chronic glaucoma usually do not have any symptoms during the early part of the disease as the pressure increases slowly but persistently. Loss of vision is gradual and results in tunnel vision.

Treatment of both types of Glaucoma eye involves reducing the amount of pressure in the eye and improving the metabolism of collagen in the eye. Elimination of food allergies is often very helpful in people with chronic glaucoma.
