Vitamin C helps repair damaged arterial walls, which prevents cholesterol deposits from forming. Recommendation: Supplement 1000 mg 3 times daily using a vitamin C/bioflavonoid combination.

• Chromium depletion has been implicated in cardiovascular disorders because of its role in insulin production and glucose regulation. Recommendation: Take 400 to 600 micrograms daily.

• N-acetylcysteine (NAC) seems to be useful in treating and preventing this disorder. It lowers levels of lipoprotein (a), which is important because high levels of lipoprotein (a) have been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases.
