•   Antioxidants—vitamins A (beta carotene), C, E, and selenium—help protect against many forms of cancer. Low blood levels of beta-carotene have been linked to an increased risk of different types of cancer, especially breast, bladder, colon, and lung cancer.

Similarly, vitamin C has been shown to protect against breast cancer in postmenopausal women, as well as colon and stomach cancer. A deficiency in vitamin E has been linked to breast cancer. Vitamin E may also help to prevent stomach cancer and other cancers of the gastrointestinal tract by inhibiting the conversion of nitrates in foods to nitrosamines, which are potential carcinogens.

Broad-based epidemiological studies have shown that selenium may protect against cancers of the breast, colon, and lung.

Selenium inactivates peroxides in the cells, which can result in tissue damage. Take 10,000 IU beta carotene, 5,000 to 10,000 milligrams vitamin C, 1,000 IU vitamin E, and 200 micrograms selenium daily.

•  Cancer natural remedies Coenzyme Q10 inhibits the formation of free radicals, unstable oxygen molecules that can damage the cells and cause cancer. Take 100 milligrams daily.

Other helpful Cancer natural remedies

•   Garlic has been found to help prevent stomach cancer and to enhance the immune system. Use it liberally in cooking. Take 2 capsules three times daily.

•   Green tea boosts the immune system. Drink up to 5 cups tea daily, preferably with meals, or take 500-milligram capsules daily.

•   Calcium has been shown to reduce the risk of colon cancer as well as to reduce the formation of polyps (precancerous lesion). It is thought that calcium binds to bile acids in the gut and neutralizes their cancer-causing effects. One study found that a daily intake of just 375 milligrams of calcium (approximately the amount in one eight-ounce glass of milk) was associated with a 50 percent reduction in the rate of colon cancer, while consuming 1,200 milligrams of calcium was linked to a 75 percent decrease in colon cancer. Take up to 1,500 milligrams daily.

•   Arginine is a nonessential amino acid that stimulates the release of growth hormone produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. Animal studies have found that arginine helps inhibit the growth of tumors. Studies with human blood cells show that arginine increases the production of immune cells that interfere with tumor growth. Commercial products are available; follow package directions.

•   Folic acid plays a key role in building DNA, the complex compound that forms our genetic blueprint. Observational studies show that people who get higher than average amounts of folic acid from their diets or supplements have lower risks of colon and breast cancer. (This could be especially important for those who drink alcohol, since alcohol blocks the absorption of folic acid and inactivates circulating folate.) An interesting observation from the Nurses' Health Study is that high intake of folic acid blunts the increased risk of breast cancer seen among women who have more than one alcoholic drink a day. Take 400 micrograms of folic acid daily.

• Lycopene is a photochemical found in fruits and vegetables in the carotenoid family. Lycopene gives fruits and vegetables their reddish color; it is found in red peppers, ruby red grapefruit, and tomatoes. Studies have shown a link between low blood levels of lycopene and increased risk of bladder and pancreatic cancer. In one study, men who consumed the greatest amounts of lycopene (6.5 milligrams per day) in their diets showed a 21 percent lower risk of prostate cancer compared with those eating the least. Commercial products are available; follow package directions.
