Ginkgo benefits
Medicinal Properties:
Hundreds of clinical and animal experiments, most of them conducted in Europe, have established the therapeutic value of ginkgo's phytochemicals. The bilobalides, ginkgolides, flavonoids, and other substances unique to the tree restore better blood flow to all parts of the body but particularly to the brain, allowing improved use of oxygen. They also stabilize the structure of brain and nerve cells and protect them from oxidative attacks by free radicals. The net result is that you remain more cere-brally supple, able to forestall the memory loss, lack of mental dexterity, and depressive tendencies that so often accompany aging.
What works for the brain works for the rest of you, too. Protecting
cells, thinning the blood, and warding off blood vessel blockages
maintain healthier circulation in your arms, legs, and eyes. The
research demonstrates that ginkgo extracts help prevent or relieve
intermittent claudication, Raynaud's disease, and other types of
peripheral vascular insufficiency; macular degeneration and, at least
in rats, diabetic retinopathy; circulation-related tinnitus and loss of
hearing; and sexual dysfunction from lack of genital blood flow. After
taking 60 to 120 milligrams of a ginkgo extract twice a day, 91 percent
of 33 women and 76 percent of 30 men reported a higher libido, improved
erection and lubrication, and better orgasms.
Allergies and asthma also improve with ginkgo. The herb contains a dozen different anti-inflammatory chemicals and seven natural antihistamines. The ginkgolides also interfere with the body's release of a protein that provokes asthmatic bronchial spasms.
