What Buchu herb Is:
Buchu is a small shrub native to South Africa where it is often used both as a flavoring agent and as a medicine. It has antiseptic and diuretic properties, and acts as a kidney tonic.
We in the industrialized world have long relied on pharmaceuticals to encourage urinary excretion and deter water retention. In Namibia and South Africa, however, traditional medicine has relied even longer on this shrubby member of the orange and lemon family for its diuretic effect. The Buchu plant produces a brown fruit from its small white flowers, but its leaves, which smell like peppermint, are considered the most medicinally active part.
Buchu herb is used to treat blood in the urine, bladder infections and other chronic urinary tract disorders. It is also said to be an effective remedy for kidney stones, prostate disorders, cystitis, and rheumatism.
