What is Bursitis?

Around your bigger joints, nature has provided a sack, called a bursa, that in the event of injury or overuse can swell with fluid to act as an internal cushion or splint. Sometimes this protective cushion becomes inflamed from the injury or excessive use, and it hurts.
With the pain, you may find the area around the joint warm to touch and, occasionally, even swollen and red.

Often, the offending bursa is one cushioning the shoulder, and you may tend to think of bursitis as being a shoulder problem. In truth, any bursa can develop such an inflammation—the hip, the elbow, or the knee.
