•   Licorice is an antiinflammatory and antiallergenic agent. Studies have found that licorice increases the half-life of Cortisol, resulting in an increased antiinflammatory action of this hormone. Take any one of the following three times daily: 1 to 2 grams of powdered root, 2 to 4 milliliters of fluid extract, or 250 to 500 milligrams of solid powdered extract.

•   Nettle relieves sneezing and itchy eyes. Take one of the following three times daily: two 300-milligram capsules or tablets or 2 to 4 milliliters of tincture.

•   Quercetin is a bioflavonoid that is a natural antihistamine and antiasthma agent. Quercetin is often included in allergy relief combination formulas. Take 400 milligrams five to twenty minutes before each meal.

•   Vitamin C is a natural antihistamine that has been found to prevent allergies and asthma. Studies have found that people with asthma tend to have low levels of vitamin C in their blood. In addition, double-blind controlled studies have found that as little as 1 gram of vitamin C daily can help prevent asthma attacks. Take 10 to 30 milligrams daily for every two pounds of body weight. Take in divided doses.

•   Coenzyme Q10 helps prevent production of histamine. Take 50 to 150 milligrams daily.

•   Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) has proven to be effective in asthma patients. In one study reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, participants reported a dramatic decrease in the frequency and severity of symptoms during asthma attacks when taking B6 supplements. Take 25 to 50 milligrams twice daily.

•   Selenium levels tend to be low in asthmatics. A selenium-containing enzyme (glutathione peroxidase) is essential for reducing leukotriene formation. Take 200 to 400 micrograms daily.

•   Garlic helps minimize allergic symptoms, including a runny nose. Garlic (and onions) inhibit the lipoxygenase enzyme, which produces an inflammatory chemical. Take one dose of odorless garlic twice a day for as long as symptoms persist.
